fay's cake journey

My name is Fay Stevens and I am the cake designer and maker behind Fay's cakes, with a little help from my family, my husband who helps me with deliveries and my daughter who loves to talk all things to do with weddings at the fairs we attend throughout the year.

I have always had a passion for all things crafty, coming from a fashion and textile background I worked for several years designing and making bespoke clothing for a company based in the Scottish Borders. In my spare time, I still love to sew and make jewellery.

It all started baking for my family and decorating my own wedding cake. I am self-taught from watching You Tube videos, cake decorating books, Pinterest and online tutorials, where my love for sugar flowers has grown. The feedback and the support I received over the years from my family and friends was overwhelming, so my hobby soon turned into my full-time job.

Fay's Cakes was established in 2011 when I registered my kitchen with West Lothian council. Fay's cakes has rapidly grown in reputation, being nominated the last six years at the Scottish wedding awards. My cakes have also featured in numerous wedding industry magazines and publications, its a great feeling seeing your own creations in print. I am also a recommended supplier to several wedding venues and suppliers.

I love meeting with my couples and hearing all about their wedding plans. I strive to produce new and innovative designs and will work closely with my couples to create the perfect cake for their special day, more and more couples are looking to push the boundaries when it comes to cake design.
My cake journey is ever-changing and I am super excited to see what the future holds for Fay's cakes! x

I recently had the pleasure of collaborating with Nadin from Nadin Dunnigan Photography to create a video with her, and also with the help of Mo Thomson digital media. This is the end result of our time together, a peek at what goes into making a wedding cake in 1 minute 40 seconds… if only I was this fast. Normally it takes a few days of sketching to come up with a design, up to a week to make the sugar flowers, a morning of baking, a day of cutting, filling and covering cakes and board, another day to dowel, stack, add any decorations and arrange the sugar flowers. (let's just say I will not be going into acting anytime soon).

Cairns farm estate

So what’s it to be? Festival-style with a hundred of your nearest and dearest, enjoying scrumptious sharing plates, a hog roast, fairylights, live music and more than a few cupcakes and sparklers?

Or maybe you’re more of a traditionalist, with a fairytale dress, string quartet, romantic readings and a decadent candlelit dinner followed by proper dancing?

Our new barn style venue has been designed to work for weddings of every kind – its clean lines and stylish finish make the perfect blank canvas – and the outside space adds a whole new dimension to your day.

The airy vaulted ceiling, huge expanses of glass, sleek bar and state of the art kitchens behind the scenes mean one thing: this is a venue that knows what it’s doing.

The barn at harburn

The Barn isn’t a “run of the mill” venue. Set amongst a traditional farm steading, the venue consists of a roundhouse and granary which have been gracefully renovated to provide a perfect entertaining space. The roundhouse was originally used as a treadmill and dates back 250 years, although its design dates back much further to the ancient Scottish Broch style.  French windows open up the venue to attractive gardens, landscaped lakes, and parkland, whilst inside exposed stone walls and high, wooden-beamed ceilings create a rustic, cozy feel.
