wedding cake design process

You will find some useful information below with regards to the process of designing your perfect cake. 


Ideally we need as much notice as you can give. We regularly take bookings up to a year in advance, and in particular our diary fills up very quickly between May and September. I offer a personal service to each of my clients, taking on a limited number of commissions each month. Sometimes I can take on commissions at shorter notice. 

Initial consultation

After getting in touch I can supply you with an initial price guide based on your guest numbers, cake size and decoration detail. This can be done via email or telephone. You can then secure your booking with a £100 'save the date' deposit, this means you are firmly booked in my diary and can carry on with the rest of your wedding planning.

Design and Tasting

Closer to your wedding date once you have picked your colours, flowers etc, you can come along for a design and tasting consultation for two which usually lasts up to an hour. During this meeting, we can discuss your wedding plans in more detail, there will be a small selection of display cakes, magazines and books for inspiration. I will also have a selection of our most popular flavours from my menu for you to try or to take away to enjoy. 

After your consultation, I will prepare a final proposal detailing your quotation, drawings, cake flavours, delivery details, stand hire and any other requirements. 

Booking and payments

In order to secure your date a non-refundable date retainer of £100 must be paid. An invoice will be sent to you and payments must be paid via BACS transfer. Please note that no dates are held until this payment has been made. The remaining balance is payable 6 weeks prior to delivery/collection of your cake. we will send a reminder 7 weeks before your wedding date. Please note that cheques are not accepted.

Delivery and set up to your venue

When you order your wedding cake with us, you can relax in the knowledge that we will always deliver and set it up on the morning of your wedding.

Delivery within West Lothian and Edinburgh is £30 thereafter mileage is charged at £0.50 per mile to and from your wedding venue plus travel time per hour. We will work out this mileage charge for you when you first enquire with us.


Your wedding cake will be bespoke made exclusively to your requirements, pricing will reflect the design the level of decoration, cake sizes, flavours and number of tiers. Typically, a 3 tier wedding cake to serve 120 guests starts from £305.  I can supply you with a price guide after your initial contact and then a final quotation once your cake has been designed.

Stand hire

We offer cake stands for hire from £20 which are to be returned within 48 hours, with a deposit of £100.

Consultation without commitment

If you would prefer a design and tasting consultation prior to securing your wedding date we can arrange a consultation. If you cannot make it to a consultation the design process can be conducted via email or by telephone. We can also arrange for a box of cakes samples to be collected at a convenient time.


All of our cakes are made fresh to order and baked as close to your wedding day as possible, we always bake from scratch. We always use high quality ingredients and only ever use free range eggs, each cake is filled with your choice of fillings (see cake menu below) and coated in a layer of vanilla buttercream then covered in sugarpaste. we always use Fairtrade were possible.

Food safety and allergens

We hold a certificate in Level 2 Food & Safety Hygiene and hold comprehensive public liability insurance. We are also registered with the local Environmental Health Authority.

Please note that all our cakes contain dairy products and are made in a kitchen where nuts are used.

There are certain Terms & Conditions that apply when you place an order with Fay's cakes. When you receive your invoice after your deposit is received, we also send a copy of our Ts&Cs. If you would like to read our Ts&Cs before committing to booking please contact us for a copy.
